ON THIS DAY - 20th September

In 1969, Waratahs two most successful batsmen, Life members ALAN GRAY (#26) and GRAHAM JOHNSON (#207), added 164 for the 3rd wicket v Churches in A grade. On the opening day of the season, Father Gray lost his first two partners early on before dominating the partnership with Father Johnson. When Gray was out for 111, Guiley took the reins, making 133 and powered Waratahs to a first day declaration at 7-351. Gray and Johnson were not only Waratahs two leading career run scorers, with more than 8,000 runs each in careers beyond twenty years, but they also individually hold the record for the most century partnerships with 14 a piece. This was one of two they made together. Churches team featured four players who had or would play for Waratahs: Ross Ridley, Syd and Merv Philp and Brian Gream.
