ON THIS DAY - 3rd January

In 1953, LAURIE COOPER (#2), an allrounder and one of the Originals, took the first Waratahs 10 wicket haul for A grade v Easts. He also became the first entry on the Best Match Performance list, scoring 5 & 56 and taking 4-36 and 6-40 as Waratahs won a hard fought match outright by just 25 runs. Of his ten victims, 8 were bowled and 1 lbw in a good display of you miss, I hit bowling. All six of his second innings victims were bowled.

Waratahs v Easts - A grade, 20th December 1952 & 3rd January 1953

In 1970, GREG RUSSELL (#131) made the third highest score in A-Res/2nd grade, with his 172 v Armidale Teachers College. Russell was a prolific run getter in the grade, making 2,153 runs there, including 5 centuries and more than 600 of them in this season alone. Waratahs won by an innings and 179 runs, their second highest victory in this grade.

In A grade, GRAHAM JOHNSON (#207) held 3 catches in an innings for A grade v St Peters.

In 1987, MICHAEL CONNOLLY (#293) had a day out for 1sts v Easts, making 109 of Waratahs 7-169 in their one-day game victory. TIM MULDOON (#296) held 3 catches in Easts reply and although recently ex-Waratahs Roger Sattler had the pleasure of dismissing Connolly, the tables were turned when Conno bagged Satts for a duck.
