Josh Moors has been a member of the Saints for over a decade and his journey has been an interesting one. From playing first grade at age 18 to taking a step back from higher grade cricket in 2024-25 to find his love of the game again. This has help produce two Kerry O’Keeffe Medals for St George Player of The Year. Time to go… In Between Balls with Joshua Moors

What year you were born and where?

2001, St George Hospital 

Can you remember your first game of cricket?

6 years old playing for Panania East Hills Cricket Club with my old man coaching. No idea how we went. 

Tell us briefly about your cricketing journey?

I played all my junior cricket in the Sutherland Shire. Super coach David Williams got me over to St George at 14 for Green Shield. I fell in love with the club culture at St George. I also recently had one season up north in the UK for Tynemouth Cricket Club and now into my 12th season at St George. 

What other sports do you play?

I come from a Rugby League background but I am 64kg ringing wet, so have always played AFL to avoid injures. Unfortunately, I am a diehard West Tigers fan. 

Highest levels in other sports played if applicable?

Southern Power AFL club division 6. Low standard which suits but size and speed, but the best bunch of blokes to play with during the cricket off-season. 

Who is your favourite sports movie or documentary?

Tales of Tiger Town. It really opened my eyes to how poor we were as a club. 

Who’s your favourite cricket commentator?

Warney, just said it how it was.

What’s the one thing about you most people don’t know about?

I am a high school Maths teacher Monday to Friday. My old man also played professional NRL which to me is incredible. 

St George Nickname?

It was Moorsy until Nick Shurmer came up with "rat boy, rat or ratty" that somehow managed to stick. 

Highest Level Played?

1st grade for St George. Captained NSW Schoolboys.

What’s your highest score in senior cricket?

155 at the gorgeous Harold Fraser Oval in the 3rd grade QF against Manly. The best wicket in Sydney. 

What has been your best bowling figures in senior cricket?

7/51 in the same 3rd grade QF. 

Can you tell us which players in the club we should be looking out for in terms of higher representative honours?

The return of Ben Pana will be something we all look back on in 10 years time. Great human, with an unreal rig. 

Who has been the scariest bowler you have played against so far?

I am scared of any medium to medium fast bowlers in the nets. In a game Liam Doddrell had me petrified. Unfortunately I am 2-0 off 2 balls facing him. 

Who has been the best spinner you have played against so far?

Devlin Malone, absolute genius. My dad and I would blow up every year he didn’t get picked for NSW. I always tried to imitate my bowling off his growing up. I made my 1st grade debut against Devlin which was kind of cool. 

Who has been the best batsman you’ve played against?

Nick Larkin scored a hundred against us in the one day QF. We had them 4-20 chasing 250 odd (Trent Copeland 4-2).  From there, it was just ridiculous how he controlled the game on his own terms. 

Who has been your funniest St George team mate?

Patty Brown, Vasi MacMillan, and Ben Pana. I have love playing cricket with these blokes. Special mention to Paul Francis and his "story time''. Pauly can always get a whole dressing room in stitches.  

Who was your childhood hero?

St George great - Thomas Kennedy 

Who are the three sports people in the world you’d most like to meet?

Benji Marshall, Dusty Martin and Adam Zampa. 

Name some St George players you admire most in terms of skills and competitive spirit?

I wish I had the skill to play Luke Bartier’s lap, reverse sweep and slog sweep. I loved playing under Matt Grealy again this year. I hope the big fella goes around again after an off season of persuasion. 

Greatest St George influence?

David Williams and Tom Kennedy. I learnt so much off these Saints legends and as older blokes they always looked out for me. 

What do you enjoy most about playing cricket?

Competing against rival clubs. 

Off the field- the mateship cricket creates, the club bonding sessions and most importantly a cold beer in the sheds after a win. 

What didn’t you like?

When grade cricket is taken too seriously. 

We need to remember, that we are all amateur cricketers who play cricket for the love of the game. 

What do you enjoy most about playing at St George?

I fell in love with the mateship and club culture at St George. The club culture is what separates us from other clubs. St George always fights hard on the field, but enjoys each other’s company off the field. 

What has been your most memorable moment in cricket?

Winning the club Champs for St George in season 25/26. Something this group of players have been working towards for a long time. It was a special night. Also taking 4-15 and beating Sydney Uni in my 1st grade debut or winning the Kerry O’Keeffe Medal the last two years. 

Favorite Saints Tradition?

Doesn't get any better than blasting out a 'knock knock' and 'oh when the saints' song after a win. Easily the best song in grade cricket. 

Tell us about the best win you’ve been involved with?

Nikos hundred to win the Kingsgrove Sports T20 Cup Final when we were down and out was special. I didn’t play, but I certainly enjoyed that day on the sidelines. 

“Favorite” worst injury playing cricket?

I am not a fan of the hour long warm ups at cricket. Waste of time for spinners and batters who go sit down for an hour anyway. 

Touch wood I haven’t been injured playing cricket. 

Favorite Beverage?

VB or Great Northern

Favorite Food?

A nice Thai takeaway on a friday night. 

Favorite Holiday Destination?

Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK with Pat and Harry Brown. Can’t believe we survived 5 months there. Ibiza and Bali for 2nd and 3rd. 

What are your hobbies?

Away from sport, I love my fishing and having a beer with mates. 

What’s the best advice you’ve received?

My old man telling me to just enjoy the game of cricket for what it is. 

What did / do you do for a living?

I am a high school Maths teacher. Will surprise a lot of people. 

Greatest achievement outside of cricket?

Dating my beautiful Mrs. Thank god

If you were down to $10 how would you spend it?

A beer with Patty Brown at Gymea Pub. 

Advise to any youngsters looking to make it in the game?

I am probably not someone to take advice off if you are trying to “make it”.

But I truly believe to play at your best in any sport, enjoyment needs to be a priority.
