New South Wales Cricket Umpires’ and Scorers’ Association (NSWCUSA) mourns the passing of Life member Errol Cranney, aged 85.

Errol joined NSWCUSA in 1991. He was a respected member of the then Sydney Cricket Association Grade Umpire Panel officiating 157 matches, 110 of which were in first grade, retiring from umpiring in 2006. Errol then became a valued Umpire Observer, always willing to share his experience to benefit fellow members. He served as an Umpire Observer from 2006-07 to 2025-26, a period of sustained, remarkable and quality service. Errol also served as an Umpire Selector and was a highly regarded Mentor for many umpires. For more than 25 years he coordinated umpire appointments in Manly Warringah District Cricket Competitions.

Errol Cranney cared for the people he worked with, he was loved and respected for it.

Errol was awarded Life membership of NSWCUSA in 2022, becoming the 55th member to receive this honour.

Errol made an outstanding contribution to cricket in the Manly Warringah District being Patron of Manly Warringah Cricket Association (MWCA) and a distinguished Life member of MWCA and Manly Warringah Junior Cricket Association.

Three cricket Life memberships for this truly humble and dedicated man. Our game, particularly the craft of umpiring, is much the richer for Errol Cranney’s involvement, commitment and contribution.

While we mourn his passing, Errol’s life is to be truly celebrated. Errol was such a good person quality umpire, observer, mentor. He was humble and understated, a real gentleman.

Errol will be fondly remembered by so many members and he will live in our hearts. To live in the hearts of others is never to die.

Deepest sympathy is extended to Jan, Errol’s wife, to his family and many friends on his passing.

May Errol Cranney rest in peace.
